Summer 23
Welcome! Croeso!
This is the Year 1 webpage
Welcome to the Summer Term in Year 1. On this page you will find information about topics, activities, and our timetable for this term. Mrs Orr and the children are going to continue to have loads of fun, learning many new things together. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 1 this term... Our whole school theme for the Summer Term is based on a heart-warming story written by Oliver Jeffers, ‘What We’ll Build’. We aim to immerse ourselves in this narratively endearing book, which demonstrates how a father and daughter build memories to cherish, whilst also conveying a tone of wonder and determination.
There is a vast range of topics covered in this book, so we have picked out some exciting aspects to study in Year 1 over the course of the term, linking these using a cross curricular approach within our English, P.S.E and Science & Technology lessons. Our learning will begin when Year 1 receive an invitation from Pembrey Racetrack asking them if they would like to visit the racing circuit to watch one of their ‘Testing’ days. The children will be presented with a package that contains a special vehicle ignition key and asked whether they could design a vehicle, which this magical key could belong to. For the children to take up this challenge, we will begin investigations to explore what makes a vehicle move, delving into the intricacies of friction and fair testing within our science lessons. Within Design & Technology lessons, the children will use their knowledge acquired from their scientific investigations and their visit to Pembrey Racetrack to design and build a moving vehicle using recycled materials,
which they will enter a class Rally competition
During English lesson the children will learn how to design and write an invitation, which they will use to invite one of their friends to the class Rally. To add further excitement to this event, the children will learn to write their own computer program during Computing lessons, where they will use coding language to create a set of algorithms that will begin a grid countdown to the start of the rally using micro:bit technology! 3, 2, 1 Go!
During the Summer Term, within our Maths lessons, the children will be provided with a range of active experiences and challenges where they will compare amounts of mass and use their own non-standard units to measure distance, linking these with our Science & Technology lessons. We will practise estimating before measuring and reflect on our estimations. The children will also be introduced to ‘Data’ handling, pictograms, and tally charts. Together, we will be learning Welsh/Cymraeg whilst sharing the story ‘Y Lindysyn Llwglyd Iawn’, using a story map to help sequence events. The children will practise using actions to recall the story using time connectives, which will support their English language writing too! They will also have an opportunity to practise speaking in Welsh in our Welsh café, consolidating their understanding of money. Throughout the Summer Term we will also complete learning activities relating to special calendar events, starting with Entrepreneurial Week and Wellbeing Week. I am excited to share these wonderful lessons with your children and will enjoy providing them will the necessary skills to support their learning and development.
