Welcome! Croeso!
Welcome to the Spring term in Year 2. On this page you will find information about topics, activities and our timetable for this half term.
I am looking forward to sharing lots of fun learning experiences with your children this term and I cannot wait to tell everyone about our first theme. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 2 this Spring half term...
Our theme for the first half of the term is going to be...
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Get ready to take to the high seas and set sail in search of treasure! This half term, we intend on visiting Cefn Sidan shipwrecks, Burry Port Harbour and the RNLI station to find out all about boats, ships and water safety. We’ll learn about the famous Welsh Pirate, Barti Ddu and write information portraits based on his life. Our reading corner will be filled with exciting and adventurous pirate stories which will inspire us to write our very own. Our science skills will help us to understand how boats float and we’ll design and make model ships using a variety of materials. We’ll study a variety of ‘seascape’ paintings from different Our map reading skills will help us to identify different seas and oceans, and we’ll learn about famous sea explorers. Stories of pirates will inspire us to make pirate flags and treasure maps. Our maths skills will help us to describe the position of objects on our treasure maps and directional language will make sure that we can find the buried treasure by helping us to move along grids using treasure maps. We’ll even find out how to talk and sing like a pirate! At the end of the project, we’ll share our learning with you. We’ll set up a maritime museum in our classroom and perform stirring sea shanties. Shiver me timbers; it’s going to be good!
Remember in our EPIC pupil voice sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on ... what would YOU like to find out about Barti Ddu and his pirate friends?
After the Spring half term we will be studying ...
Welcome to the second half of the Spring term in Year 2. On this page you will find information about topics, activities and our timetable for this half term. I am looking forward to sharing lots of fun learning experiences with your children this term
Our theme for this half term is going to be...
We will continue to learn about the seas and oceans that surround us here in Wales by reading books written by Welsh authors.
Something has appeared in our Investigation Station in the Discovery Zone! It’s a message in a bottle…but who wrote it? What does it say? We will be developing our sense of wonder and our questioning skills to find out more!
This half term, we intend on continuing to learn about water safety by having our very own RNLI lifeboat station set up in the classroom! We will be part of the crew, wearing the
uniform, answering important calls from people in distress and taking our first aid kit and boat out onto the choppy seas to rescue them! We’ll use everything we have learned in the first part of the Spring term to write four part pirate stories and write information portraits based on the life of the Welsh Pirate King Barti Ddu. Our reading corner will be filled with pirate costumes and huge inflatable microphones so we can pretend to be Barti Ddu and hotseat as him to develop our questioning skills. We will also be able to read all the lovely poems and stories written by Welsh artists in there too. We’ll be investigating which materials are waterproof using our scientific skills and record our findings to help the Harbour Master’s wife make him a new waterproof coat. Our creative juices will be flowing when we study Claude Monet’s beautiful seascapes in order to recreate them in a variety of ways using different media. Money will be the focus for Maths where we will apply our skills to see how much loot those pesky pirates have stolen.
We will finish off the Spring term by looking at the Christian celebration of Easter and all the new life that comes with the beautiful season of Spring.
