Autumn 2021
Welcome! Croeso!
This is the Year 6 webpage.
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 6. On this page you will find information about topics, activities and our timetable for this half term.
I am looking forward to sharing lots of fun learning experiences with your children this term and I cannot wait to tell everyone about our first theme. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 6 this Autumn half term...
Our theme for the first half of the term is
To begin the Autumn Term we are going back in time with our project ‘A Child’s War’. In this project, the children will be investigating how the the Second World War affected the towns and valleys of Wales and the children that lived there. We will be exploring the reasons why children were evacuated from their homes and what life was like for an evacuee living in Pembrey – why were they evacuated? Where did they go? What happened to the children who stayed in the city? What was life like as an evacuee? Can you imagine what it must have been like for the evacuees who had to leave their families and everything that they knew behind to live with perfect strangers in a place that they’d never been or even heard of before? Well, our boys and girls in Year 6 will be doing just that!
This term, we will be learning all about playscripts and this will be a perfect opportunity for us to write our very own playscripts to dramatize the life of an evacuee. We will also be getting creative and the children will be drawing landscapes in the style of Will Evans.
We will be investigating the effects and devastation of the Swansea Blitz before exploring Pembrey Country Park to find out about the very important role that it played during WWII.
Does this sound exciting? Remember in our EPIC sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on ... what would YOU like to find out about being an evacuee in Wales?
After the October half term we will be studying
Crimson, scarlet, burgundy, cherry. Blood flows through our bodies in all its vibrant shades of red and during this half term, we will be exploring our circulation system. There’s no time to be squeamish as we explore the structure of the heart in detail, investigating the function of the veins, arteries and chambers up close. They all work hard to move blood around our bodies; William Harvey was fascinated with anatomy, and made ground-breaking discoveries about valves … I wonder what the boys and girls might uncover during their investigations?
What exactly is in blood? How does our blood flow? What does our heart rate tell us? We will be exploring all of these questions and finding out how to keep our hearts happy with cardiovascular exercise and healthy food. We will also kickstart a campaign to spread the word about the damage caused to the lungs and heart by smoking.
It's over to you - time to start thinking of your ideas for our EPIC session, where we will decide together what we can learn about in our exciting theme 'Blood Heart!'
Below is our class timetable - what happens in Year 6 and when.
