Autumn 2021-2022
Our theme for the first half of the term is going to be...
To begin the Autumn Term we are going to become detectives in order to explore our local area in ‘Street Detectives'.
This way or that way? Where should we go? Up to the church or down to the Country Park? Let’s learn about our local community, looking at houses old and new and finding out how our streets have changed since our mums, dads, grannies and grandpas were young. The boys and girls will be writing Pembrey poems, making maps and plans of the streets around us, planning routes and discovering all we can about what surrounds our school.
It will also be interesting for our pupils to compare Pembrey with a place completely different – Botswana. What will we find out? Are there any similarities?
Finally, at the end of the project, our Year 2 pupils will have the opportunity to say what they think would improve our local area. When the Local Councilor writes and asks us to help make our street a better place, it’s time to get our thinking caps on and paintbrushes at the ready.
Ready to roll, Street Detectives? Get your clipboards and cameras – it’s time to start investigating.
Does this sound exciting? Remember in our EPIC pupil voice sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on ... what would YOU like to find out about our local area?
After the October half term we will be studying ...
This half term you may find us climbing the battlements or tunnelling in the ground, there’s a whole world of adventure and fun to be found. We will visit Kidwelly castle to explore the towers, battlements and maybe a secret tunnel or two! We’ll learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time. Using a wide range of materials, we’ll build models of castles and test the strength of our structures. We hope they won’t fall down!
The pupils will also learn the traditional stories of Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff and create models inspired by them, learning all about the properties of different materials along the way.
Using a variety of sources, the children will learn all about the tallest buildings and the longest tunnels in the world. We’ll find out about the amazing Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and improve our PE skills by playing attacking and defending games.
At the end of our project, we’ll have so much to share! We’ll display our amazing structures and share our knowledge in a special question and answer session.
It's over to you - time to start thinking of your ideas for our EPIC pupil voice sessions, where we will decide together what we can learn about in our exciting theme 'Towers, Tunnels and Turrets!'
Below is our class timetable - what happens in Year 2 and when.
