Autumn 22
Welcome! Croeso!
This is the Year 1 webpage.
Welcome to the autumn term in Year 1. On this page you will find information about topics, activities and our timetable for this half term.
Mrs Orr and the children are going to have loads of fun this term, learning lots of new things together. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 1 this autumn term...
Our whole school theme for the autumn term is based on an exquisite and thought provoking book written by Oliver Jeffers, ‘Here We Are’
There is a vast range of topics covered in this book so we have picked out some exciting aspects to study in Year 1 over the course of the term.
Our learning will take a tour through land and sea, where we will focus on geographical elements of the curriculum. We will discover the wonders of our local environment and learn about how we are all part of a valuable community. Following a local walk in Pembrey, the children will explore how to create a street map, detailing the local buildings, roads and green spaces they observed along the way. Using this knowledge, they will be able to understand exactly where they are within the world! Our class reader to support the children’s knowledge of map work and caption writing in English language lessons is the wonderful text, ‘Me on the Map’, written by Joan Sweeney.
During Humanities lessons the children will be introduced to the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole a Jamaican nurse and business woman. They will explore and investigate these significant individuals from the past, collecting and recording information from given sources, comparing this information with modern nursing today in Wales. We will also track Florence’s arduous journey across land and sea!
Within Science and Technology lessons, the children will explore everyday materials, distinguishing between an object and the materials from which it is made. They will identify and name a variety of everyday materials, testing which material would be most suitable for a waterproof cape for Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole so that they are kept dry when tending to the wounded soldiers.
Together, we will be learning Welsh/ Cymraeg whilst sharing a Welsh story using a story map to help sequence events. The children will practise using actions to recall the story using time connectives, which will support their English language writing too! As a class we will learn the names of different types of weather in Welsh and practise broadcasting a weather forecast in both English and Welsh!
I am excited to share these wonderful lessons with your children and will enjoy providing them will the necessary skills to support their learning and development.
