Autumn 2021-2022
Welcome! Croeso!
This is the Year 4 webpage.
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 4. On this page you will find information about topics, activities and our timetable for this half term.
I am looking forward to sharing lots of fun learning experiences with your children this term and I cannot wait to tell everyone about our first theme. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 4 this Autumn half term...
Our theme for the first half of the term is going to be...
To begin the Autumn Term we will be going on an exciting voyage of discovery through our project ‘Burps, Bottoms and Bile'. Throughout this project the children will explore the busy world inside their bodies, with a particular focus on their toothy grin and the digestive system. Have you ever wondered why we have two sets of teeth? Or what teeth are made of? Perhaps you have been fascinated by how food travels through your body?
Initially, the boys and girls in Year 4 will speak to a dental expert about the importance of keeping their teeth sparkling clean. They will also learn about the different types of teeth we have and how they all work together to help us chew our food. Through a scientific exploration, the children will investigate the impact of various sugary substances upon the enamel on their teeth. The children will then create a fact file, explaining how to look after their teeth and practise their presenting and oracy skills by sharing their findings with younger children in the school.
The children will learn about the different organs in their bodies and follow a story map to retell the journey of a tasty morsel of food as it makes its way through the digestive system, helped by some mouthwatering saliva. Our pupils will use their imaginations in order to write a fantasy story of their own journey as if they were a piece of food travelling through each part of the digestive system. Finally, at the end of the project the children will design a t-shirt and a 3D model of the digestive system - how exciting! Throughout this term we will learn about how we can best look after this marvellous belching, squelching, mixture making machine that we call our body.
Does this sound exciting? Remember in our EPIC sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on ... what would YOU like to find out about our digestive system?
After the October half term we will be studying ...
After half term we will be going on a journey of a different kind in our two mini topics. The main title of the theme is ‘Interconnected World’ where the children will be able to use globes, maps and atlases to explore the immediate and distant world around them. They will be able to use their compass skills and four/six figure grid references to delve into the tropics, continents and countries of the world. Following that they will be exploring the United Kingdom in greater detail and conducting an enquiry based on our local area - how interesting!
Whilst exploring the locality using geographical equipment, our pupils will also investigate the close community links we have with Amelia Earhart in our second mini theme, we will find out how her travels around the globe led her to Burry Port (as well as much further afield). Keep your eyes peeled in and around our local area for any clues to this famous pilot – there are lots to spot if you look carefully enough!
So, get your thinking caps on my little adventurers, dig out your globes and atlases and gather some ideas about what you might like to learn about the interconnected world around us!
