Spring 2022-2023
Our theme for the term is
During the first half of our Spring Term, we will be exploring our 'cynefin' and finding out about belonging to a community in Wales and beyond. We will be finding out about our Welsh ancestors from the 17th century and their fight for the survival of the Welsh language. Did you know that some of our very brave ancestors set sail on the Mimosa in 1865 to develop a new colony in Patagonia to do just that? We can’t wait to find out to find out more about what happened on their journey and the problems they faced when they finally got there … what a journey that must have been! We will also be celebrating our Welsh heritage and culture as part of Santes Dwynwen, Saint David's Day and Urdd celebrations.
During the second half of the term, we will be going back in time with our project ‘Tick, Tock, Turn Back the Clock’. In this project, the children will be investigating how the Second World War affected the towns and valleys of Wales and the children that lived there. We will be exploring the reasons why children were evacuated from their homes and what life was like for an evacuee living in Pembrey – why were they evacuated? Where did they go? What happened to the children who stayed in the city? What was life like as an evacuee? Can you imagine what it must have been like for the evacuees who had to leave their families and everything that they knew behind to live with perfect strangers in a place that they’d never been or even heard of before? Well, our boys and girls in Year 6 will be doing just that!
This term, we will be learning all about playscripts and this will be a perfect opportunity for us to write our very own playscripts to dramatise the life of an
evacuee. We will also be getting creative and the children will be drawing landscapes in the style of Will Evans.
We will be investigating the effects and devastation of the Swansea Blitz before exploring Pembrey Country Park to find out about the very important role that it played during WWII.
It’s going to be a very busy term as we celebrate St David’s Day, World Book Day, Fairtrade Fortnight and Comic Relief to name but a few! It is also a very important time of year as we celebrate Easter; we will be learning all about the meaning of Easter and why it is important to us and everyone around the world.
Does this sound exciting? Remember in our EPIC sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on ... what would YOU like to find out about Wales and our history
