Autumn 2022-2023
I am looking forward to sharing lots of fun learning experiences with your children this term and I cannot wait to tell everyone about our first theme. Let's find out what we will be studying in Year 6 this Autumn term...
We are really excited this term because every class in the whole school is doing a theme based on the book, ‘Here We Are” by Oliver Jeffers … how exciting! The book explores our magical Earth and is a reminder to all of us just how important it is to care for and appreciate our planet and all of the people, animals, habitats and landscapes that live on it it … after all, there is only one Earth and it is our job to look after it!
This term, we are going to be Earth-explorers as our theme takes us on a journey of discovery about our place on Earth! We will be going on a journey around our locality, the UK and the World as we investigate how our world is changing. We will need to develop our map skills and knowledge before we embark on our journey … so, my little explorers, what do you already know about the features of Earth? How can we use map scales and grid references to find places? What are lines of longitude and latitude? Hmmmm …. I wonder what time it is in Australia when we are eating our breakfast? What are the children in America doing when we are eating our lunch? We will be investigating the different time zones around the world as part of our theme so we will soon be able to find out!
We will then be learning more about climate change and the causes and consequences of global warming … I wonder how Pembrey and Burry Port will be affected by climate change in the future? Will it change in our lifetime? We will be conducting a locality investigation to find how climate change has already affected our locality and what this could mean for our future. We will also focus on what exactly is being done by different people to protect our local environment and the part that we can play in determining its future.
I wonder … do you know what this is a picture of? It is something very exciting, very new and it will be the FIRST of its kind in the whole of the WORLD … and it is very, very close to us! Maybe we should find out this term?
This term, the junior scientists in Pembrey will be learning all about reversible and irreversible changes. We will then use everything that we have learned to rise to a very special science challenge by a well-known character who has a BIG problem to solve … I wonder what it could possibly be? I hope that we can help!
Not only are we junior scientists in Year 6 but we are junior reporters, too! We will be using everything that we have learned to write a newspaper article about our findings … notepads at the ready! Maybe you will spot some of our environmental art in the community? Keep a look out!
It’s going to be a very busy half term as we celebrate Harvest, World Peace Day and Children in Need to name but a few! Not forgetting our Marvellous Monday outdoor days, too!
It is also a very important time of year as we celebrate Christmas; we will be learning all about the meaning of Christmas and why it is important to us and everyone around the world.
Does this sound exciting? Remember in our EPIC sessions it's your ideas that count so get your thinking caps on, dig out your globes and atlases and gather some ideas about what you might like to learn about the changing world around us! Let’s have even more fun experiences in Year 6 this term!
