September 2021: ALN Transformation - What changed?
Special Educational Needs (SEN) is now known as Additional Learning Needs (ALN) as a result of the new act, namely the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018. The new ALN Code was approved in April 2021 and went live from September 2021.
The short video below explains clearly what change happened across Wales:
The implementation period of this transformation has been on-going for three years and will be completed in summer 2025- during this period Statements of SEN and individual education plans (IEPs) will be converted into individual development plans (IDPs). This have been done in a mandatory, phased approach on the basis of year groups, including pupils with statements.
ALN Provision @ Pembrey School
At Pembrey School our ALNCo is Mrs Stephanie Evans, a member of our Senior Leadership Team & Reception Class teacher.
Our aim In Pembrey is to ensure that each of our learners with ALN are supported in an inclusive environment so they can overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential. To enable this to happen we believe in creating a strong home/school partnership based on mutual respect, ensuring we all work together with the common goal of supporting the needs of each learner. We are of the belief that ALL teachers are teachers of learners with additional learning needs and our provision reflects our inclusive ethos.
In Pembrey School our ALN provision includes:
- differentiated work with the class teacher
- targeted in-class support
- effective short term interventions on a 1:1 basis, or within small groups
- well established relationships with outside agencies
- detailed One Page Profiles (OPPs) to gain knowledge of each individual learner, discover what is important to them and how they can be supported to become the best that they can be.
- Individual Development Plans (IDPs) - these plans contain a OPP, targeted agreed actions centred around that specific learner and names and contact details for all people and agencies involved.
- Effective pastoral support e.g. ELSA (Emotional Literacy, Positive Play, Mindfulness, etc.)
We also have a designated staff member for ELSA is Mrs Emma Snook who is fully trained by Education Psychologists to provide this intervention. See below for further information:
